The Diseño de California project was inspired from a collection of hand-drawn maps from the late 1800s depicting numerous regions of California. These maps served as the original Spanish and Mexican Land Grant Records at the end of the Mexican-American War in 1848. Following California’s statehood in 1850, the state created a Board of land commissioners to legitimate land claims of Mexican citizens. These historical records serve as a reminder that these Hispanic farmers were some of the first people to recognize and define California's unique geography with this series of hand-drawn maps. Despite seldom receiving the recognition they deserve, to this day the Hispanic community continues to be the central pillar of the wine industry through hard work, resilience, and a deep connection to the land.
